
Johan Vaaler, invented the paperclip in 1899 in Norway. He patented his design in 1899 in Germany. What he invented didn't look like the modern paperclip. It looked like the one on the left.
A company called Gem Manufacturing Ltd designed the double oval shaped paperclip. This form of paperclip is called the "Gem" clip.

A interesting thing is that during World War II, Norwegians were forced to not wear anything that had to do with their king. So they started wearing paperclips, because paperclips came from Norway.
